Summary of ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn’s Working Visit to the United States

The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development were honored to host Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, during his inaugural working visit to Washington, D.C. This visit marked a significant milestone in strengthening the ASEAN-U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), initiated by President Biden and ASEAN leaders in November 2022.

Throughout his visit, Dr. Kao engaged with an array of stakeholders, including top-level U.S. government officials, Members of Congress, leaders from the private sector, as well as academic scholars and media representatives. These discussions underscored the ongoing robust implementation of the CSP and highlighted the multifaceted relationship between ASEAN and the U.S.

The visit served as an opportunity to review the successes of the ASEAN-U.S. CSP and to lay groundwork for the forthcoming ASEAN-U.S. Plan of Action for 2026-2030, which aims to further enhance the partnership over the next five years. Key progress in various domains of the CSP was acknowledged, setting the stage for expanded cooperation in new areas.
